BECA is an acronym for Bridge for Emerging Contemporary Art. In January 2008 we began presenting international group exhibitions of emerging art + design at BECA gallery, our formerly named physical gallery space in New Orleans. Simultaneously, we began assisting both new and established collectors, curators, art enthusiasts and galleries with the discovery of the newest works by today's most innovative emerging artists and designers from around the world. From January 2008 - June 2009, BECA gallery featured a variety of contemporary sculpture, paintings, video, works on paper, photography, textiles, installations, mixed media works as well as what's new in design.
As time past we began to realize how much truly innovative work by emerging artists and designers was not being given a public audience. New art and design fuels the best of what's yet to come on this planet so we wanted to create an avenue where these benefits could be realized in an expanded and evolving format, unrestricted by commercial constraints. A global center dedicated to creating public exhibitions of emerging art + design and related programming was needed so the non-profit arm of the gallery, The BECA Foundation, was founded to begin laying the ground work to accomplish this. Our 501-c-3 fiscal sponsor, Fractured Atlas located in New York, has enabled us to receive both in-kind and monetary donations while our organization is in its early stages of development. BECA's unique exhibition program dedicated to emerging art + design will continue and grow exponentially under the guidance of The BECA Foundation and its generous and dedicated advisors who provide a wealth of expert guidance and creative input. Planning is underway to research the development of future BECA Artspace/s (location/s TBD). The exhibition space/s will be the world's first large scale exhibition spaces dedicated to the dual purpose of exhibiting works by both emerging artists + designers for the benefit of both the local communities in which they reside and for the benefit of the global public via interactive and educational online components. In the meantime, several exhibition + programming events and test sites, both here in the US and abroad, are being developed to broaden the participation opportunities for emerging artists, designers and the public around the world.
We thank those who have been supporting our efforts from the beginning and we welcome new friends, partners and supporters as we grow our international public arts programming.
With warm regards, Melissa Roberts and Kurt Schlough, Directors
